Renting a Boat With a Dog: What to Know

two dogs on boat
  • Ensure your dog is comfortable on boats!
  • Bring a dog life jacket - not all boating companies will have one.
  • Bring a towel or blanket for vinyl seats.
  • Ask about size limits, or anything else regarding their policies, like keeping them leashed while on the property
  • Confirm the policy when reserving, because it may vary depending on the type of boat
  • Know that dogs are not allowed on the DEC-owned islands (so no dogs on picnic islands or island camping)
  • Know that you do not need a boating license to rent a boat, but you do need a drivers license, and individual marinas may require you to be 21 and watch a safety/training video

It's not legally required, but it's recommended.

There may be, depending on the company and the boat. Lake George Boat Tours at the Blue Lagoon Resort, for instance, only takes smaller dogs. Ask about size/breed when booking.

It depends on the marina. There may be a pet fee, or there may only be a pet fee if they need to do extra cleaning afterwards.

A standard leash, collapsible water bowl, fresh drinking water, towel, and maybe a treat!

Vinyl and fiberglass boat decks can get hot in the sun - this is is part of the reason why you should bring a towel or blanket for the dog.
