Lake George Colonial Wars Walking Tour Stop 14: Repose of the Fallen Memorial
This memorial plaza marks a somber chapter of the Revolutionary War fought on this ground. In May of 2026, the remains of 44 individuals with the Continental Army were reinterred here in six columbaria.
Storyboards trace the the story back to late 1775, when patriot forces under Generals Richard Montgomery and Benedict Arnold marched north into Canada, hoping to draw Quebec into the rebellion as a "14th colony."
The campaign was unsuccessful, as Montgomery was killed and Arnold severely wounded. Surviving troops made their way back to northern New York the following June, ravaged by smallpox. A hospital was established under the order of General Horatio Gates to care for the sick and dying.
In 2019, over 200 years after the conflict, crews working on a construction project in Lake George Village unearthed the remains of these soldiers, using artifacts like 1st Pennsylvania Battalion uniform buttons to trace their identity.
Among the dead were at least one woman and one child, part of the army's "camp followers" who traveled and served alongside the soldiers.
