Lake George to Welcome Ironman 70.3 Triathlon Beginning 2027
A major endurance event is coming to Lake George, and it's bringing more than just a race to the region. The Ironman 70.3 Triathlon will make Lake George its home for three years beginning in 2027, welcoming athletes, families, and spectators to Warren County. Local officials project the event will create new opportunities for local businesses and tourism, with thousands of visitors traveling to the area for race weekend.
A Major Endurance Event Comes to Lake George
The Ironman 70.3 is a "half-Ironman" endurance event combining a 1.2-mile swim, 56-mile bike ride, and 13.1-mile run. The distances total 70.3 miles, half the distance of a full Ironman.
Under a three-year agreement, Lake George will host the Ironman 70.3 from 2027 through 2029, with the first race scheduled for Sunday, June 13, 2027. Organizers plan to map the 56-mile bike course to benefit communities throughout northern Warren County, extending the event's reach beyond Lake George.
An Economic Boost for Warren County
According to economic impact projections, the Ironman 70.3 could provide a significant boost to Lake George and Warren County. During the five-day event period, the triathlon could generate more than $3 million in direct business sales, $4.68 million in total economic activity, 5,530 room nights, and more than 11,000 visitor days.
Projected tourist spending includes:
- Lodging: $1.1 million
- Food & Beverage: $783,000
- Recreation: More than $300,000
- Transportation: Nearly $100,000
This spending stands to benefit hotels, restaurants, retailers, attractions, and other local businesses as athletes and their families travel to the area during the early summer tourism season.
More Than Just a Race Weekend
The economic impact of the Ironman 70.3 could extend beyond the five-day event period. Current projections do not include athletes who may visit Lake George before race weekend to train on the course, creating additional opportunities for local hotels, restaurants, and businesses.
The three-year agreement is also designed to support long-term tourism growth. Organizers expect the first year to introduce thousands of visitors to the region, with the following two years building on those connections and encouraging return visits.
Bringing Lake George into the Spotlight
Along with bringing athletes and visitors to the region, Ironman will give Lake George national and international exposure. Course announcements, athlete stories, media coverage, and social media posts could showcase Lake George and its surrounding communities to an outdoor-focused audience.
“Ironman also brings national and international exposure that ordinary tourism advertising cannot easily reproduce,” Lake George Deputy Town Supervisor Ed Pagnotta said, according to the Post-Star.
The event could introduce Warren County to potential visitors while giving the region another opportunity to promote itself as an outdoor destination.
Looking Toward the Future
The 2027 Ironman 70.3 will mark the beginning of a three-year partnership designed to measure the event's impact and build on its success. Following the first race, Warren County will receive a report detailing visitor numbers, hotel bookings, business spending, and other economic results.
With the first race scheduled for June 13, 2027, Lake George is preparing to welcome its first Ironman 70.3 and looking toward its potential to create lasting tourism and economic benefits for the region.
