Lake George officials are going to conduct (buy) a study exploring the idea of opening a casino in the village. The study, which has been approved, will cost as much as $15,000 yet is an extremely important portion of the planning process.
In a similar study conducted in 1996, it was found that crime rates increase in certain categories with the opening of new casinos. Lake George doesn’t even have a police department. This could cause problems, and lead to additional spending.
The area is already well known as a family resort destination with a beautiful lake. A casino may be seen as a blemish on the current image of the town. A casino in Lake George will definitely bring in business, but at what cost?
There are many people in the area that are out of work, and a new casino would, without a doubt, provide a number of new jobs. If the casino was open all year, tourists and patrons will be populating the village all winter long, helping out several businesses that are forced to close for the season or open only on weekends due to lack of volume.
In the opinion of Lake George Mayor Robert Blais, this could be one of the biggest decisions that the village will ever have to make.

What do you think? Will a casino in Lake George help the year-round economy, or will it tarnish the reputation of our wonderful vacation destination?
Casinos would definitely tarnish the reputation of Lake George. There’s enough of these group bus lures around the Northeast and not enough fishing havens for the public to enjoy!
Although it would bring in a much needed revenue, it would also bring in undesirables all year long and a lot more troubles then its worth. Gambling is not a redeemable virtue. Leave Lake George alone! We love it like it is; a family oriented atmosphere. It’s not a good idea!
How about a ski mountain on one of the nearby mountains? That would retain the family atmosphere and keep businesses open in the winter. If its carefully layed out with the environment taken as priority it could retain the aesthetics of the area while creating a better Lake George! We need to make LG a year round resort, while retaining its small town charm. A tubing park for the kiddies, a ski/snowboard mountain with night skiing- can be used in summer for zip lines, hiking and mountain biking. Perhaps even an action park type area with water slides or other summertime action packed fun! Lake George is great, lets Try to make it even better!
It would be a bad thing for the Lake. The Lake is the most important thing and should be kept clean. More people coming up and development will impact the Lake in a bad way with run off and building. I agree with twocents LEAVE THE LAKE ALONE! It makes me sick to think of this happening.
Lake George does not need a casino. Winter business dies down, but not enough to merit putting some trashy casino in to help boost revenue a bit. Parking is already a hassle, space is limited, and people enjoy going there for what it is, a casino would ruin everything.
