So what are trestle ponies? They are fancy sawhorses used to support massive timbers when building large timber frame structures. Build yourself a set and have solid sawhorses for projects around the house, or use them to create the base for a trestle dining room table. Whatever you use them for, you will be learning the basics of timber framing. Whether building these trestle ponies or an entire building, the knowledge and skills needed for cutting these beautiful mortise and tenon joints is the same. This is a great beginner's class where you will learn the history of timber framing as you drill, cut, and chisel.

What is smelting? It is a process that uses materials taken right from the earth, clay, iron ore, and fire, to create the iron that blacksmiths have used since the earliest times. The smelter created a bloom, which is the basic raw form of usable iron. New York State led the country in iron production before the Civil War and much of that iron was mined right here in the Adirondacks. In this class you will learn to build a clay furnace and prepare ore on the first day. Then learn the basics of smelting as you produce a bloom from Adirondack magnetite clay. This is a must-do class if you are interested in historic iron production or are keen about Adirondack history! You will greatly expand your knowledge of the unique characteristics of iron that make it ideal for forging. Smelting is a skill and art that has been kept alive by just a handful of artisan blacksmiths. You won't want to miss this class.

Spring is the time for rain, but with rain come some of the most beautiful and delicate subjects in the Adirondacks. From gently cascading brooks to raging waterfalls, along with budding trees and fields of wild flowers, springtime has something for everyone. In this class we will discuss the relationship between us, our cameras, and our subjects by exploring the connection between shutter speed, aperture, and distance to our subject. Participants should possess an understanding of how to use the manual features of their SLR/DSLR cameras and be prepared for cool wet weather. We will spend a majority of our time in the field exploring local wild flower hot spots and waterfalls. The beauty of flowers and waterfalls is that they are always willing to pose, so we will get up close and personal with our subjects and develop a relationship with them. There will also be Q & A and indoor lessons. Bring appropriate clothing and footwear for being outside in potentially wet, cool conditions.
