Editor’s Note 9/9/20: The Prospect Mountain hiking trail and summit area have re-opened.
The popular Prospect Mountain Trail has been closed by the DEC, in part because of hikers not adhering to the rules. Here’s what you need to know.
Trail Closed While Construction Takes Place
The summit area above the parking lot has been closed to the public due to construction activity, with signage informing hikers the summit was not open. Many hikers still entered the construction zone, so the DEC has shut the trail down.
The summit of the mountain and the trail will remain closed until late August, while 500 feet of mortared stone border wall that is crumbling along the summit lookout areas is removed and replaced with individual cut stone blocks. The moving of these blocks is expected to be difficult and dangerous. The road and path to the parking lot are blocked.

This is not the first trail closure of the season, with the Schumann Preserve at Pilot Knob and The Pinnacle off limits as well. According to the Lake George Land Conservancy both will remain closed until after Labor Day. The exact reopening dates for Prospect Mountain Trail, Schumann Preserve, and The Pinnacle are still to be determined.
Sleeping Beauty Mountain, Cat Mountain, and many other hiking opportunities are still available in the Lake George region.
