The plan to develop a skate park right in Lake George Village was formed in 2008 by a group of local students who were avid skateboarders. That shared idea became a reality in 2015, and on July 23, 2016, the Lake George Skate Plaza will host its official grand opening fundraiser!
For many years, skateboarders in Lake George Village have advocated for a safe spot to ride in the area. In 2008, the founders of the Lake George Skate Plaza met with Mayor Blais and community leaders to discuss their goal. Since 2009, the group of skateboarders has held multiple fundraisers, including Spaghetti Dinners, Skate Demos, a Village Garage Sale, and more. Mayor Blais, local businesses, grants, and donations all played a role in the development of the skate park.
Phase 1 of the Lake George Skate Plaza was completed and opened to the public in 2015. The Plaza is located at Charles R. Wood Park, which is at the southern tip of Lake George on Beach Road. It consists of a triangular park with many spots that are perfect for performing tricks on. For safety purposes, all skaters 12 and under have to wear a helmet and be accompanied by an adult, and children under 5 are not allowed. However, in addition to skateboards and in-line skates, BMX bikes and scooters can now be used at the park.
Although it opened last year, the Skate Plaza will have its grand opening celebration and fundraiser later this month. Presented by both the Skate Plaza and Fat Willie’s Ice Cream and Skate Shop, all proceeds will go toward Phase 2, which includes a bowl that will bisect the longest side of the plaza.
Throughout the grand opening event, there will be skateboard, scooter, and BMX contests with prizes for the best tricks. The contest entry fee is $10. For non-competitors, free lessons will be offered for all three sports, and donations are encouraged; sporting equipment will be provided if needed. For everyone else, the fundraiser will feature open park sessions, vendors, and live music.
The Lake George Skate Plaza grand opening event will run from 11:00AM-6:00PM at the Charles R. Wood Park – the skate park’s location – on July 23. Admission is free.
