Ticonderoga & Hague: Day Trips Near Lake George NY
A small town nestled between Lake George and Lake Champlain, Ticonderoga offers a powerful history with plenty of fun and educational things to see and do. Ticonderoga's name was coined by the Iroquois, meaning "the land between the waters."
Ticonderoga is best known for its fort. Formerly known as Fort Carillon, Fort Ticonderoga was built between 1754 and 1757 during the French and Indian War, when Great Britain fought France. Fort Ticonderoga served as a key point of access to both Canada and the Hudson River Valley. Many bloody battles were fought at this site, but the most well-known happened in 1775. Benedict Arnold, along with Ethan Allen and the Green Mountain Boys, attacked the sleeping British at the crack of dawn, claiming the first rebel victory of the Revolutionary War.
