It's Time To Visit Lake George by Mary Giella

February 2012 Archives

Snow will begin falling in the early afternoon tomorrow, and continue through Thursday afternoon.  When all is said and done, we should have between 5 and 12 inches of heavy snow.  This is great news for the snow lovers and winter sports enthusiasts.  You've waited all year for this and now it is finally here!  Bring your sleds, skis, and snowmobiles - It's Time to Visit Lake George!

I made sure that the snow blower has plenty of gas to do the job of clearing my driveway and walkways.

If not for this being a leap year, February 2012 would have gone down in history as the least snowy of all Februaries on record!  We will just have to wait and see where we score in the record books. Look for pictures of the snow on Thursday!

The 3rd annual Girlfriends Getaway will be held at the Sagamore in Bolton Landing from Friday May 11 through Sunday May 13.  Tickets must be pre-purchased, so please plan ahead!

I had the pleasure of talking with Wuaneata Waller, the event organizer, about this year's event.  Marcie Fraser and Dr. Ginger Grancagnolo, Ed.D, D. Min will be the keynote speakers this year.  Marcie is returning again this year by popular demand.  Marcie is the Fitness and Health Reporter for YNN as well as a published author.  Marcie is scheduled to speak at 4:30pm on Friday just prior to the Meet & Greet Reception.  Dr. Grancagnolo is scheduled to speak at 3:45pm on Friday.  The Meet & Great Reception will follow with appetizer, cash bar, and book signing by both Marice Fraser and Dr. Grancagnolo.  Don't forget to check out tarot readings by Moonlight Tarot and Henna Tattoo Art by Sue Ferdinand, owner of Faces by Ferdinand.

Ladies, registration begins at 3:00pm on Friday - here's a great reason to be on time!  At 3:30, one lucky lady will be chosen for an ambush makeover - get a new hairstyle and beauty makeover.  Beauty makeover is compliments of Gia Albarelli, The Eye Candy Girl, and hair by Tina Cacckello, Tina's Hair Affair.

As of February 21st, we hold the record for the least snowy season as recorded for the period of  December through February - that hasn't happened in a very long time - I think they said the old record was from 1913!

Now for the weather update - the forecast shows that we are expected about 3 inches of snow between tonight and tomorrow night!  The bad thing is that the temperature today is 48 and tomorrow it is forecasted to reach 45.  I guess my snowblower will stay in the garage.  What an amazing winter it has been - stay tuned!

These ATVers were splashing around at the southern end of Lake George this past Saturday morning - it really is a mild winter!

The 15 day weather forecast says that only 2 out of the next 15 days will be below freezing during the day.  What's more amazing is that the snow outlook is just 1.04 inches total for the next 15 days also.  Looks like February 2012 is going to be in the history books as one of the, if not the least snowiest on record!

This weekend is the last weekend of the Winter Carnival.  Congrats and Kudos to all those volunteers involved with planning the Carnival and working so hard to make it a success.  This year has been a success despite the lack of ice and snow, thanks to them.  Again, congrats to all those that made it happen for all of us!  Fireworks and bonfire on Saturday - enjoy!

Snow or no snow, it's always a great time to visit Lake George!

The extended forecast indicates that the temperatures will be dropping for the weekend with below freezing temps both day and night from Saturday through Tuesday.  Just some snow flurry activity, no storms are brewing in the near future.

Weekend # 2 of the Lake George Winter Carnival - BBQ Cookoff, Fireworks, Bonfire, and Tavern Competition are scheduled.  For more info, visit lakegeorgewintercarnival.com or http://www.lakegeorge.com/winter/carnival.cfm.

For those of you that are still "making plans" for Valentine's Day, check out http://www.lakegeorge.com/business/dunhams-bay-resort-4070/ for Dunham's Bay's Valentine's Special for this Saturday and Sunday. - Champagne and strawberries on arrival!

Opening ceremonies for the Lake George Winter Carnival takes place in Shepards Park at noon.  The weather forecast calls for partly sunny with a high of 33 and a low of 13.  Warm up at the bonfire before or after dinner while you're watching the fireworks over the lake.  Fireworks begin at 6:30!

A bit of weather trivia for Lake George Winters that I have learned - the Lake has failed to freeze over 9 times since 1990.  Lake George is considered to be frozen when you can travel the entire lake continuously on ice.  If this winter continues this way, it looks like this will be the 10th time.  From 1908 to 1990, the Lake failed to completely freeze just 3 times.  Winters are a changin!

A look at the extended forecast - about 4 inches of snow is expected to fall on February 15th - just in time for the President's Day Holiday Weekend - YAY!
