Mother's Day on Lake George

On Sunday afternoon Kathy and Hal Lawson celebrated mothers day on board the Highliner with their grandson Julian Lawson Julian not only caught his first lake trout but some impressive keepers. Iam not sure who was more excited, Julian or the grandparents. Photos below.

Just one of those days on Lake George

Last week, Tom Balon and his girlfriend Katie came over from Gloucester Mass to try some freshwater fishing. Tom is very familiar with the Adirondacks and trout fishing, but Katie was new to the 'Dacks and trout fishing. The morning proved to be perfect- gorgeous sunrise, flat water and plenty of hungry trout, big trout. Katie kept talking about how gorgeous the lake was and Tom kept saying how the fishing was exceeding his expectations.

By 10 a.m. Katie and Tom had boated a dozen good lakers and Katie said she was pretty tired. I knew Katie wanted to see some more of the lake, so I volunteered a short sightseeing cruise. On our way back Katie thanked me for a day she said she would always remember. I couldn't have felt better. Katie asked me if I ever see bald eagles on the lake. I told her I see a few each year. She said she had been waiting her whole life to see one in the wild. I was telling Katie about all the eagles I saw in Minnesota this past fall when I looked off the stern of the boat and what do you know, "Look Katie!" I yelled, "it's a bald eagle!" Believe it or not : a Lake George Fish Story !

I'm not going to give you some long , drawn out fish tale, just the facts. Lake George landlocked salmon can live 5 to 7 years and at maturity reach a length of 28 inches and the maximum weight of about 8 pounds. You would be hard pressed to find one any bigger that would be verifiable. On Friday afternoon, in 2 foot white caps and 15 - 20 mph winds a customer brought the biggest landlocked I had ever seen to my net. As I went to lift the fish, the hook let loose and I flipped the fish out of the net. I estimate the fish to be 30 to 31 inches and 10 to 11 pounds- the biggest landlocked I had ever seen. These reports are beginning to sound like a lot of the same thing. I don't know what else to say, but it has been excellent fishing this season. Still fishing stickbaits top to bottom, live and spoons shallow for salmon. Numbers of fish per trip have been excellent and size has picked up with some real quality fish. You're missing it! Bachelor party takes to the water on Lake George

Highliner kicked off the weekend today with Colin Sweet and group of buddies from Orange County to celebrate their friend Nathan's bachelor party . The boys enjoyed a good morning on the Highliner -boating 11 fish. It has been a great fishing season so far. Stay tuned for the rest of the weekend. Here's to Nathan before he takes the plunge!

Outstanding Fishing on Lake George, New York !

The Highliner team and I want to say a big thank you to everyone who fished Lake George with us in April. Temperatures were chilly on several mornings even below freezing, but the fishing was absolutely fantastic. There wasn't one trip the entire month that left anyone without bragging rights. This was truly both a Captain's and a fisherman's dream month. We ended the month with two outstanding trips. Saturday, I fished with brothers Sergey and Andrea Pavlenko ; both have been fishing with me for several years now and we have a lot of laughs while on the water. Saturday morning when we left the dock, temps were around 28 degrees and winds were blowing out of the northeast at 15 to 25 mph. The lake was frothing with 2-3 foot white caps. That's ok though. The heat was on in the cabin and the coffee mugs were full. I decided to run north to a bay I thought would be holding fish and also give us a little protection from the howling winds. When we arrived at the bay the winds were still howling. I just looked at both guys and said, "Let's see what happens". We are going to run 4 downriggers that morning at various depths. The fish are still suspended from top to bottom. I set the first downrigger and was putting up the line on the second one when the first one popped. Fish on! It took us three more tries of setting our four lines down before we were able to get all four set up without one popping. At morning's end we had boated 19 lakers. Needless to say, we were all very happy.

SUNDAY...
Sunday morning I had Lee Madsen and his son Trevor come over from Massachusetts. Lee and Trevor have also fished with me several times. They brought along their friends, also a father and son team, Fred and Zach. Lee and Trevor are both hard- core outdoorsmen. They hunt and fish as often as they can. In fact they hunt here in the Adirondacks and do very well, not an easy task in the big woods here. Fred and Zach were a little less familiar with this type of fishing and were excited to learn. The morning again was nothing short of awesome. The boys boated 13 lakers and I have a funny feeling that both Fred and Zach will be back soon to do some more fishing on board the Highliner. Lake George Fishing in April - Cool Weather- Hot Fishing!

Fishing has been hot this past week on Lake George. The smelt are piled up outside the creek mouth and the expected rain this week should really get them running. Trolling stickbaits outside the creek mouth in waters around 40 feet and running baits between 15 and 30 feet has been putting plenty of fish in the boat for the Highliner's customers.

Warrensburg locals Paul Kane and his son Nathan, brother- in law- Terry Williams and Greg Davidson and his son Chris from Plymouth, Mass, all teamed up on board the Highliner Saturday morning and proceeded to whoop on the lakers. By morning's end, the boys had boated 14 fish and kept 4 for the grill. All had a lot of laughs and fun. Excellent trip for all.

The afternoon charter was my favorite kind of charter. Brian Gedes came from CT with his family on the afternoon charter. A cold front was moving in and rain would be falling on us shortly. Fishing was going to be tough for the afternoon. Why is this my favorite type of trip? Brian's two youngest boys, Reese and Rhett, had both recently taken an enthusiastic interest in fishing. They had never been on a downrigger fishing charter before and both were excited to learn, and eager to catch fish. The rain came, the temperature fell ten degrees, the wind put two foot white caps on the lake and guess what? The poles popped and shouts of "fish on" rang out over the next several hours.

By trip's end, the boys had boated 8 lakers; Reese took top honors w three lakers. Everyone had lots of fun and laughs watching the boys reel them in. Lake George Fishing Tips - Smelt Run 2012

As we approach the last half of April on Lake George, it is time to concentrate on the smelt run. With early ice-out, warmer water temps and very little water in the brooks, it is going to be interesting to see how this year's run plays out. A day or two of steady rain could help by getting some water in the brooks .

Use your electronics to locate the schools of smelt and the deeper holes and drop-offs just outside the brooks. Once you have located the smelt, troll stickbaits like rapalas , thundersticks and smithwicks in various depths of the water columns . Fish will be located anywhere from top to bottom this time of year. Spoons and streamer flys in bright colors troll just below the surface but work best on the salmon.

Fishin' Time on Lake George, New York!

Well it's that time of year again, fishin' time ! Sorry I didn't blog over the winter but I just didn't feel safe encouraging folks to head out on the ice . With no real ice on Lake George this year we can expect some great trout and salmon fishing this season. We will be starting charters on 4/1 and we can't wait!

With warmer waters, the smelt may move into the shallows a little early this year before making their spawning run. This could be a season with some great early trout and salmon fishing outside the spawning brooks. If you've never fished a smelt run, this is the year to do it!
