LAKE GEORGE NY -- Plunging into icy waters is an age-old tradition here in Lake George. On Saturday, November 19, 2011, that tradition continues at Shepard Park Beach with the Special Olympics Lake George Polar Plunge.

Special Olympics Polar Plunge

PLEASE NOTE: This is a separate event from the annual New Years Day Polar Plunge Swim in Lake George. More info

Freezin' For...What Reason?!

The Lake George Polar Plunge participants will be "freezin' for a reason" as they rush into the bone-chilling waters of Lake George for this great cause.

Hundreds of people take the plunge each year in Lake George and at different locations around the state to raise funds for the Special Olympics New York. These daring participants help by showing their support for the Special Olympics and raising money for the organization.

Many form teams and have fun with it. The goal is to get friends, family, colleagues and other donors to sponsor your plunge, ultimately raising thousands of dollars to help the Special Olympics reach their fundraising goal, which this year is the $1 million mark.

And a few...incentives, for those hesitant to dip their toes in the water--if a participant raises $100 to take the Plunge they'll receive an official Polar Plunge sweatshirt, $250 -- fleece, gloves, scarf and cap, $500 -- moisture management polo, $2,500 -- insulated poly jacket!

Warm Up

Registration for the Lake George Polar Plunge begins at 9 AM, and participants hit the icy winter waters of Lake George at noon. Pick up a scarf, hat, long johns or any various merchandise for sale -- proof that you did the Plunge (or at least were a witness)!

But you better believe that time will be well occupied with fun events, activites and giveaways to help you warm up to the idea of taking the plunge

Before you start freezing enjoy just a few of these favorite things -- everything will be happening on or around the beach, in and out of tents--so come out and make a day of it, enjoy!

Too chicken to plunge? Don't worry! You can still support the cause. Join our Chicken Coop VIP area for preffered plunge viewing, special prizes, food and drinks and still get the same incentives as the Plungers! You must raise a minimum of $50 to enter. Learn More »

Anyone is welcome to come to the Plunge and cheer on friends or co-workers, in fact, it's encouraged -- how would you like to jump into freezing cold water without anyone there to cheer you on? Make no ifs, ands or buts, anyone who comes is welcome to take part in all of the festivities -- raffles included!

Don't Forget...

Some Important Things To Remember Before Taking The Plunge

  • Pack a towel and water shoes
  • Wear your swimsuit under your clothes
  • Bring easy to get into warm clothes (and shoes!) for after the Plunge
  • For your own safety, never dive into the water
  • Bring a plastic bag for wet clothes, and somewhere to store your dry clothes
  • Bring along a disposable, waterproof camera
  • Have fun!

Then at noon, on the dot, feel the thrill and chill of the ice-cold waters of Lake George. Connect with everyone as crazy as you beforehand and check out the Lake George Polar Plunge Facebook page and see how many people like it -- and join the count yourself! That is, if you're brave enough to take the challenge...
