A Master of American Modernism
Georgia O’Keeffe remains one of America’s best-known female artists whose distinctive, colorful works and powerful abstract images are timeless and memorable. Although a child of the mid-west, Georgia O’Keeffe’s amazing talents and drive set her on a journey that brought her to the shores of Lake George NY region regularly during the 1920’s, where she memorialized her surroundings in exquisite color and impressions.
As a young artist, Ms. O’Keeffe’s paintings were exhibited in a gallery owned by renowned photographer Alfred Stieglitz. Her professional association with him began when he fell in love with her work and displayed several of her pieces. After some time they fell in love, and Steiglitz left his wife to move in with O’Keeffe, a move that caused some scandal at the time. They were married in 1924.
Artistic Reflections on Lake George
Steiglitz’ family owned a summer home in Lake George where he and Ms. O’Keeffe spent many summers and autumns. During her time in Lake George NY, Georgia O’Keeffe produced many paintings of the area. Some of her works from her time in Lake George include:

After the death of her husband, Ms. O’Keeffe returned to Lake George and buried his ashes beneath a tall pine tree beside the shore. She subsequently returned to her home in New Mexico where she lived until her death in 1986 at the age of 98.
